Abstract/Contents:Describes the lack of correlation of tunic layers with the systematics of angiosperm groups. Suggests that "apical organization types might be more characteristic of habit-types than of taxonomic groups." Describes a study to "determine in a relatively large sample whether grass apical meristems, that are unselected as to age of plant or plastochronic stage, show in the number of tunica layers any differences correlated with classification." Describes the species used in the study and the procedures employed. Reports that "the results clearly indicate a strong correlation between the number of tunica layers and classification." Describes the species in which multiple tunica layers are common, and those in which single tunica layers are common. States that "the various groups are remarkably uniform in this character and the groups correspond with those delimited on the basis of other characters of systematic significance." Describes characteristics of various species, focusing on Festucoideae and Panicoideae.
