Abstract/Contents:"Maleic hydrazide and chlorfluorenols have been used successfully to reduce mowing in predominantly grassy landscapes in the Eastern U.S. and Europe. In some cases reduced blade and sheath elongation contribute to the beneficial effects and in others reduced length or number of inflorescence axes is the major factor. Extension of these findings to well-tended, heavily trafficked turfgrass areas on golf courses represents a potential misapplication of chemicals. For most turf, inhibition of leaf blade, stolon, and rhizome elongation is all that is desired, but the compounds available do more than this. They inhibit leaf initiation, tiller formation, rhizome and stolon initiation, branching and root growth, and consequently interfere with turf renewal. Inhibition of these processes of organ initiation eventually leads to a decline in turf density and, hence, cannot be tolerated continuously, nor even for short periods when the requirement for grass renewal is high. Growth retardants, such as chlormequat and ancymidol, giving the appropriate kinds of inhibition, have been tested in greenhouses, but they are too costly for practical field use. We conclude, therefore, that growth regulators currently available are not suitable for general application to California golf courses."
