Abstract/Contents:Presents results of a study "developed in order to provide golf courses with management strategies for dealing with issues arising from the use of poor quality irrigation water," which occurs in "many of the arid regions of North America, including the Canadian Prairies provinces," and also to "evaluate simple, inexpensive instruments that could be used in the field to quantify soil problems and measure improvements after corrective measures." Describes the test procedures in detail. Explains that, as was discovered in a previous study, four factors affect water quality: "potential for nutrient uptake problems, permeability hazard rating, salinity hazard rating and specific ion toxicity rating." Explains that results indicated that in the soil there was a high potential for nutrient uptake problems, a high permeability hazard rating, a high salinity hazard rating, and a high specific ion toxicity for sodium but not chloride. Discusses the effects of acid treatments and Calphlex on the soil. Also explains that infiltrometers were an effective way to measure soil conditions, though sodium ion meters were too unreliable.
