| Abstract/Contents: | "The last 15 years have seen a great many new developments in sport and recreation. Not least among these has been the growth of an entirely new industry, that of synthetic sports surfaces. A recent count showed well over 100 companies offering between them about 400 synthetic surfaces in the UK alone. This paper is an attempt to rationalize this potentially bewildering scene. The ways in which such products can be grouped into basic types is explained with reference to the general properties to be expected from each catergory - synthetic turf (conventional and sand-filled) and rubber (manufactured in-situ or prefabricated). It is now possible to quantify many of the claims of manufacturers and to incorporate aspects of performance into specifications and guarantees which bring a more objective approach to the all-imporatant questions of performance and durability of these surfaces. The stages of a logical selection process are therefore:- 1. A clear understanding of the requirements. 2. An appropriate product selection. 3. A meaningful specification. 4. An objective guarantee." |
