Abstract/Contents:"En-tout-cas, on entering the artificial grass market, decided that the sand-filled system would solve some of the problems of existing artificial grasses. But, whereas the rubber mat energy-absorbing pads were satisfactory, there were limits to how much energy could be absorbed within acceptable cost levels, and in particular it was clear that ball bounce needed to be controlled accurately. Equally important was the need to find a lower cost solution to constructing an adequate sub-base for shock pad and artificial grass. Finally a composite material was selected which consisted of a filtration membrane with a "bird's nest" of highly resilient filaments bonded to it, approx. 15 mm thick. This is laid loose on the sub-base and the interstices filled with granular material chosen to impart the required give and ball bounce. The final sand-filled artificial grass surface is then laid. The En-tout-cas dynamic shock-pad thus allows the sub-base and the surface to be tailored to specific requirements."
