| Abstract/Contents: | "Controlled-release fertilizers are a relatively new nutrient type. Among chemically synthesized slow-release materials, isobutylidene diurea - IBDU - is playing a leading role. Compared to conventional nitrogen forms, IBDU is cold-water-soluble only to a very small extent. It is practically 100% hot-water-soluble, and contains only a tiny hot-water-insoluble fraction. Thus, it consists of nitrogen which is fully plant-available within the growth season. Because of its chemical nature, IBDU is highly resistant to leaching, meaning minimal risk of nutrient losses. This is particularly advantageous on light permeable soils, and highly desirable from the ecological point of view. Nutrient losses are also minimized because the mineralization of nitrogen from IBDU takes place according to plant needs. In neutral and slightly acid soils, IBDU is broken down by bacteria. There is also some release of nitrogen by hydrolysis. Its nutrients become available under those soil conditions which favour plant growth. It is psychologically neutral fertilizer and does not lower the soil ph. The special characteristics of IBDU ensure a uniform growth pattern, to which crops respond with higher vield and better quality." |
