Abstract/Contents:Discusses the history and uses of vegetated rooftop systems. Describes modern green roofs and contrasts the two categories of green roofs: intensive and extensive. Discusses the ecological and economic benefits of green roofs. Included in these benefits are the retention of stormwater and the filtration of wastewater, the ability to insulate buildings, and "the potential for reducing the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE)." Discusses factors to be considered prior to installing a green roof. These factors include the microclimate, the site location, the environmental conditions, and the selection of plant materials. Describes the Michigan State University Green Roof Research Program and its objectives, experiments, and findings in green roof research. Discusses the future of green roofs in the United States, and the barriers involved in increasing the number of green roofs. Included in these barriers are a lack of public awareness, the high costs of installation and upkeep, the lack of quantifiable data, and the lack of technical information on building techniques.
