Abstract/Contents:Presents opposing viewpoints to Kit Campbell's article that described an alternative solution to the pressures put on playing fields and the lack of open land in the UK. Campbell suggested selling poor-quality playing fields to finance parks and replacing them with artificial turf pitches. David Mitchell and Phil Lomax sound off against this idea and suggest solutions of their own. Mitchell discusses the importance of open space, while Lomax exposes what is, in his opinion, the faulty logic behind Campbell's proposal. That artificial turf pitches have to be replaced every ten years at great cost, and many teams refuse to play on anything but grass, are some of the reasons he gives to support his claim. He provides many suggestions for ways to increase the usability of existing turf pitches, and ways to work with developers to build new pitches.
