Abstract/Contents:Describes Warren Savini's experience regrassing the course at Rolling Green Golf Club his first summer as superintendent there. Discusses the problems Philadelphia weather presents to superintendents, including long, hot summers that make it difficult to keep Poa annua alive. Explains that rolling Green Golf Course dates back to 1926 and faced many problems, including anthracnose, bacterial wilt, and worn out greens. Details the work Savini did on the course to control the diseases, but turf loss on the course ranged from 10 to 60 percent. Describes the decision to fumigate and reseed the greens with creeping bentgrass, and the expansion of the project to include regrassing the fairways and tees, practice tee expansion, creek restoration, and tree removal. Explains that germination was slow because of insufficient irrigation and insufficient tree removal. States that "the course reopened for play on April 13th...Record heat coupled with significant water restrictions ensued - just what I didn't need - a long, hard summer. The greens held up to heavy play (180 to 210 rounds per day)...Additional tree removal was scheduled for the winter of 2002-2003. By the fall of 2002 the greens had recovered from the summer. Overall, the entire project was a great success, and we look forward to next summer."
