Abstract/Contents: | Describes the "subtle changes directly impact[ing] play" for every area on golf courses and how to prevent the changes from happening. First the greens are discussed, beginning with mowing practices and how the perimeter of the greens slowly change as maintenance personnel skirt edge of the greens, softening the lines and reducing them. Explains that the topdressing frequency for greens in the shade and those in the sun also have a large effect on the firmness of the greens. Suggests that the area around the green is just as important as the green itself and should be treated as such and not neglected. Explains that the bunkers and the distribution of sand on adjacent turf areas also create problems and that the flow of sand from topdressing to the perimeter of the greens can create a "sand dam" that will impact the flow of water off the greens. Because of maintenance care and player treatment of the tees they tend to become crowned and as a result, players only use the center of the tees, exacerbating the problem. Discusses the impact trees can have on the course, including too much shade being provided as trees grow, the width of the trunks obscuring the course, low-hanging limbs disrupting play and making lost balls harder to find, and roots that grow to close to the surface, posing problems with equipment damage and player injuries. |
