Abstract/Contents:Describes a water quality management system known as a phytozone, a "unique wetland treatment system" which is "similar to a shallow forebay at the edge of a lake." The design "integrates the treatment benefits of a detention basin and a created wetland." Discusses the 22 acres of phytozones at Raptor Bay in Estero, Florida, which are "characterized by a wide earthen berm that separates a shallow pool from the main body of the lake." Once the runoff has drained directly from the storm-water drainage system or from swales around the lakes, "the phytozone temporarily stores and slows the movement of the runoff and therefore promotes settling of solids and attached pollutants. Vegetation planted in the phytozone absorbs and filters dissolved nutrients." At Raptor Bay the phytozones have additionally provided habitat and feeding areas for wading birds and other wildlife.
