| Abstract/Contents: | "As a nation we spend a great deal of time regularly mowing our lawns and sportsfields. Many amateur gardeners appear to get pleasure and satisfaction from the exercise but for local authorities it is a costly and time-consuming task. This paper looks at the major costs that contribute to the total and conclude that the principal routes to cost reduction are to: - 1. Use high-capacity machines (within reason). 2. Replace the machines at the right economic age. 3. Measure and plan the work in advance. 4. Give the right incentives to the staff. Although cost savings are important they should not become an end in themselves and in the future there is likely to be an increasing need to develop mowing programmes that will give a greater variety to amenity grass areas and will be more closely related to their utility and aesthetic needs." |
