Abstract/Contents:Discusses the risks associated with the use of of monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA), which is "the most effective broad-spectrum postemergence grass herbicide for use in bermudagrass golf and sports turf. It's also a heavy element and Class A human carcinogen." Describes the amount of arsenic added to the environment with each application of MSMA. Explains that "arsenic has only slight volatility, that is, tendency to evaporate; therefore additional applications will, for the most part, either accumulate at increasinly higher concentrations in soil, or move in water." Explains the problems associated with aresenic in groundwater and soil. States that "the chronic effects of small doses are not easily predicted, but arsenic is not good to be in contact with."
