Abstract/Contents:"Thallium (Tl) uptake by some perennial plants was examined. The plants were grown in pots for 14 months in a green house. Amounts of Tl uptake by both tall fesque (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and weeping lovegrass (Eragrisuts curvula Nees) showed a linear relationship with applied Tl concentration in soil up to 20 mg kg-1. Therefore, using the kinetics model for the first order reaction, the half-lives which is the period required to reduce an applied Tl concentration in soil by a half can be predicted by an amount of Tl taken up for a growth period. More than 20 times difference in Tl uptake among tested species was found. Broadleaf dock (Rumex obtusifolius L.) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) took up 38 and 15.2% of applied Tl over 14 months and the half-lives are calculated to be 1.7 and 4.9 year using the kinetic model, respectively. The two plants might be useful for reducing Tl concentration in soil."
