Abstract/Contents:Profiles Vancouver's Stanley Park, "one of the world's most renowned urban parks." Describes the maintenance of its various turf areas, including "a rugby field, an 18-hole pitch and putt golf course, two cricket pitches, three softball diamonds, a lawn bowling green, tennis courts and large acreages of manicured parkland." Describes the various grass blends which are used and the special maintenance requirements of the rugby field. Explains that the Stanley Park grounds crew for the most part avoids the use of chemicals as part of city policy. Says that, instead, they try to "`keep the turf as healthy as possible, to choke out as many weeds as possible.'" Concludes that, "in a park this popular, having good turf is an absolute necessity."
