Abstract/Contents:Discusses the Orange County Fire Ant Authority's battle against fire ants in California. Explains that "primary concerns with fire ants, apart from their mounds appearing in otherwise green turf, are the safety of workers and recreationalists, such as golfers. . .[The red imported fire ant (RIFA)] can kill people who are allergic to the venom." Describes the success of the Orange County Fire Ant Authority, stating that "the program has been responsible for `no less than 98 percent eradication.'" Describes the locations and severity of RIFA infestations. Discusses the quarantine of plant materials going in and out of Orange and Riversity County turf facilities, which has helped control RIFA. Discusses control mehtods and application guidelines for golf courses.
