Abstract/Contents:"Twenty-three old and newly developed tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea schreb.) cultivars were evaluated for turf quality. Seeding was at 487 kg ha -1 in May, 1983. Plots were watered as needed and mowed at 50 mm with clippings returned. Nitrogen was applied at the rate of 195 kg ha -1; no pesticides were employed during the evaluation period. Plots were visually rated for quality on a monthly basis for 3 years, ending in May 1986. Preliminary (2 year) results show significant quality differences among cultivars, with all newly developed "improved" cultivars out-performing the older cultivars 'Alta', 'Fawn' and 'K-31'. Among the top performing cultivars are: 'Adventure', 'Olympic', 'Jaguar', 'Falcon', 'Apache', 'Tempo', 'Houndog', 'Maverick' and 'Mustang'. Newly developed cultivars were significantly less coarse than the old. None of the cultivars developed any disease. All cultivars were strikingly competative with weeds and although plots were heavily infested with a variety of broadleaf weeds during the establishment period, all fescues beat the weeds, choking them out almost completely. Third and final year results of this study will be available in June, 1986."
