Abstract/Contents:"Ground cover assessment is of great importance in experimental work and in routine screening of turfgrass cultivars. In the past, visual assessment has predominated as the commonest method for estimating ground cover, sometimes supplemented with, or replaced by the use of point quadrats. A trial is described in which visual assessment, point quadrats and a reflectance ratio meter were all used to score a turfgrass cultivar trial, before, during, and after artificial wear treatments were applied. The trial was set up using a double-blind procedure to remove possible observer bias. The results showed that on three out of four occasions the reflectance ratio meter gave the best separation of cultivars, whilst ground cover of live material scored by point quadrats gave the worst separation of cultivars on all occasions. Total ground cover (live plus dead) scored by point quadrats gave similar values to the visual scores. In conclusion the reflectance ratio meter seems a very promising method for routine scoring of large numbers of plots, combining both speed and objectivity."
