| Abstract/Contents: | "Mowing is by far the largest single cost incurred in maintaining amenity grassland. The potential for savings by reducing the mowing requirement is therefore substantial. Breeding slow growing grasses is one way of trying to realise this potential. Slow vertical growth in the grass must not, however, be a symptom of lack of vigour, or the sward may be invaded by weeds and unduly susceptible to wear damage. Logro is a slender creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. litoralis) bred from crosses between a genetically dwarf seedling and a normal height variety. It has shorter leaves, more tillers and a more prostrate growth habit than normal red fescue cultivars. In turf trials Logro has performed as well as normal red fescues in wear and appearance and requires up to 50% fewer cuts per season. Further information is available from the author." |
