| Abstract/Contents: | "Due to the increasingly prohibitive cost of fertilizers and their application, tolerance to low nutrient levels is rapidly becoming a highly desirable trait in amenity grass cultivars. The response of eight cultivars of Festuca rubra to varying levels of nitrogen and phosphorus was studied in sand culture. Over the two ranges of nutrient concentrations examined, nitrogen was found to be the most important element in determining plant growth. Cultivar differences in total dry matter production were small and non-significant. However, cultivars differed markedly in their tiller production and shoot:root ratios. These findings may be of significance in the development of cultivars tolerant to low nutrient levels." |
