Abstract/Contents:"Eleven tests of playing quality were used in this study to examine the spatial and temporal variations in the performance of seven natural turf football pitches. The tests were made at up to twelve positions on each pitch covering areas sustaining different degrees of wear, for instance, wing and goalmouth areas. Pearson's correlation coefficients were computed for each test showing the interrelations between aspects of playing quality. Some of the tests were directly dependent on others, for example, the football rebound resilience test and the Clegg Impact test of surface hardness. Other tests were influenced by the combined effects of different aspects of the surface. For instance, the traction between a simulated footballer's boot and the surface was found to be dependent upon the joint operation of ground cover, soil moisture content and surface roughness. The study showed that the variability of the tests within some pitches on one day may exceed the total variation encountered over a full season for other pitches. The test results for two consecutive days on a sand carpet pitch and an undrained medium-heavy soil pitch were compared to illustrate the variations within and between pitches. It was shown that the sand carpet pitch provided more consistent playing conditions both within the pitch and also through the playing season. Finally, the implications of the pilot study findings for other work were discussed and recommendations made for further test work."
