Abstract/Contents:States that "an increasing number of farmer testimonials and replicated scientific trials suggest that plant diseases can be suppressed by treating plant surfaces with a variety of water-based compost preparations called compost teas." Describes the process of making compost teas, explaining the differences between nonaerated and aerated compost teas. Explains that "the beneficial microorganisms [in compost teas] hinder pathogens in several ways - covering surfaces and thus preventing access by pathogens; competing for nutrients required by some pathogens; secreting secondary metabolites (antibiotics) on plant surfaces; and directly parasiting pathogens." Describes "the mechanism of disease control from compost tea and how the process of making and applying compost tea can affect the potential for controlling foliar diseases."
