Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted by the University of Connecticut which determines the reason for skinned portions on sport turf. Results include that "surface friction was decreased by additions of calcined clay when applied to fine-textured soils (loam and silt loam), while coarser textured soils (two loamy sands and a coarse sand) were unaffected." Results also included that "increasing soil moisture decreased surface hardness on all but the coarse sand, with the greatest decrease occuring in the fine textured soils." Concludes that there is a "need to characterize infield surfaces to reduce misunderstandings that often arise when assessing ball to surface properties and to further provide a knowledge base whereby standard methods for measuring sports surfaces can be developed and implemented."
