Abstract/Contents:"This experiment was an attempt to develop a relatively quick test for screening perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) for cold tolerance. Field tests are not only costly and weather dependent, but do not adequately separate cold tolerance from other interacting field factors such as disease, drought, insect attacks, and soil variations. Seedling ryegrass plugs established in the greenhouse and hardened in a growth chamber were placed in test tubes, stoppered, and frozen in a circulating ethanol bath at temperatures of -7.5, -8.5, and -10 C. Following a recovery period in the greenhouse, plugs were evaluated for injury. Results obtained by this freezing technique closely agreed with those obtained by subcrown internode measurement (short internode indicates high cold tolerance), and long-term field plot evaluations (Typic Udipsamments soil). Alcohol bath freezing of perennial ryegrass seedlings has considerable merit for screening cultivars for cold tolerances."
