Abstract/Contents:"Plant dormancy is a complex set of phenomena, important throughout the plant lifecycle. Dormancy can occur in many plant structures, various ecosystems, and various climates. Consequently, an abundance of terms has arisen to describe specific dormancy phenomena. We contend that dormant structures can be classified into a few universal types using, as criteria, the parameters of dormancy induction and release. Such an approach requires and encourages rigorous investigation into the causes of dormancy. To effectively communicate this line of thought, it will be necessary to dismantle the historic, redundant, confusing terms presently in use, and in their place adopt the following descriptive terminology: ecodormancy, paradormancy, and endodormancy. This presentation will focus on definition of these terms and the qualitative classification system. Discussion of the implications for seed physiologists, bud physiologists, dormancy development quantification, and other tangential aspects of dormancy will be encouraged."
