| Abstract/Contents: | "Cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue were treated over a five-year period with several chemicals, including retardants, having growth regulator properties to determine their effects on growth and development. Chemicals studied included amidochlor, flurprimidol, mefluidide, paclobutrazol, XE1019, fenarimol, chlorsulfron, sethoxydim, and EPTC. The first four materials were tested all five years and application of the remaning chemicals varied from year to year. All materials retarded vertical vegetative shoot growth, higher rates more than low, for variable periods ranging from 4 to 12 weeks. When applied at the proper growth stage, amidochlor and mefluidide were consistently effective in suppressing seedhead development. Duration and intensity of injury varied with the chemical, treatment rate, absorption site, and environmental stresses present. Weather extremes reduced the effectiveness of the growth retardants. In greenhouse studies, flurprimidol and paclobutrazol applications increased the root-shoot ratios of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass." |
