| Abstract/Contents: | "Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) will frequently invade, persist, and become a major component of irrigated, closecut, intensely fertilized turfs. Because its drought tolerance is quite poor, turfs containing a majority of annual bluegrass are often severely thinned during drought. Laboratory and field investigations were initiated to study etamide-dimethyl-5-((trifluoromethyl)sulfony (N-(2,4-dimethyl-5-((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)amino)phenyl) acetamide) on quality and drought tolerance parameters of annual bluegrass. Mefluidide treatments resulted in effective seedhead suppression, clipping yield reduction, color enhancement, reduced sward density, and rate-dependent phytotoxicity. Poa was less responsive to repeat applications. Mefluidide treatments enhanced root-shoot ratios of boot-stage Poa, but not pre-boot stage, newly seeded Poa. Significant changes from mefluidide treatments were also seen in leaf turgor maintenance by osmotic adjustment in response to polyethylene glycol-induced water stress, leaf elastic modulii, and critical leaf water potentials for stomatal closure." |
