| Abstract/Contents: | "The common practice of visual evaluations of turf grass trials is taken into a critical discussion, and it is proposed that as much as possible of visual (i.e. subjective) evaluations are exchanged for more objective ones. A schedule of evaluations during the year is suggested, specially thought for variety trials within the plant breeding work: a) A visual rating of the general impression is done at least once a month during the snow-free part of the year. b) A visual rating of the ground cover is done at the time of establishment and at the beginning and the end of the vegetation period. c) A visual rating of the discolouration is done on certain occasions as e. g. drought, pest and disease attacks, and at the beginning and the end of the vegetation period. The beginning and the end of the winter dormancy period is noted. d) Attacks of some pests and diseases can be fairly objectively rated. This is true e. g. in the case of Helminthosporium on Poa pratensis which is rated at Weibullsholm every autumn. In some other cases a more subjective rating may be used. This is done as soon as an attack is of any importance. e) Counting of the shoot density is done two or three times during the vegetation period, e.g. in the spring after the growth has started, during the summer, and in the autumn when practically all growth has ceased. f) The colour of the variety is determined at one or a few occasions in a mown stand under normal growth. g) The growth rate of the variety is measured at normal mowing height a few times during the vegetation period." |
