Abstract/Contents: | Reports results of a study on Ormond bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L) Pers.) and Pee Dee bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L) Pers. x Cynodon transvaalensis [Burtt-Davy]) cultivars with the application effects of gibberellic acid (CA3 in keeping turf color optimum during winter months. Turf plugs of each cultivar were established and maintained in plastic pots containing 100% mortar sand in root zone. Then a dark period of no light and cooler temperatures was produced until leaf temperature reached 50°F. Then gibberellic acid was applied at 30 g/acre and again after a full week at 50°F. Growth and color observations were made regularly. Results indicate Pee Dee had a lower visual rating after one week at 50°F. After two weeks both GA3 applied cultivars were rating high. Ormond with GA3 showed the highest ratings of all treatments. This was a first phase in an ongoing study of the effects of GA3, and chilling injury sensitive turf species. |
