Abstract/Contents:Reviews fungal summer diseases and cultural practices prouding control. Two of the most difficult diseases to control are Helminthosporium leaf blotch of cynodon and Fusarium blight of Festuca arundinacea. Helminthosporium leaf blotch is commonly caused following hot, dry periods by fungal spores. Spore production is stimulated by the dry and remoistening of turf crop debris (clippings). Fusarium blight of Festuca arundinacea is caused by hot, dry, windy weather as it reduces a plant ability to take up water and nutrients. Also high nitrogen application rates in summer add to disease susceptibility. Spore generation was also found to favor the drying and remoistening process. Therefore, irrigation in summer should be based on the existing turf canopy structure. The crop debris layer should be kept moist- not wet, and minimized by mowing higher.
