Abstract/Contents:Summarizes the characteristics of roots and limiting factors that play a role in root management and development. States that roots with rapid extension will provide a deeper and more beneficial root system. Greater root length density will result in the roots ability to absorb more nutrients and water. More root hairs will also increase the nutrient and water uptake at the root's surface and proper management, species of grass, and environmental factors will increase the life of the root. Limiting factors may be grouped into two categories: 1) shoot related causes and 2) soil related causes. Shoot factors involve the production of compounds necessary for growth and recovery from injuries. Other factors include low chlorophyll, covering on leaves, and less CO2 uptake due to drought which in return reduce the photosynthesis process in plants. Desirable soil factors include a high soil strength, low O2 in soil, cultivation of layers, increased water capacity due to organic matter, and modifying excessively hot and cold soil temperatures. Mentions correcting poor chemical and biological conditions as possible tools for promoting proper root development.
