Abstract/Contents:Details characteristics of safe turfgrass and poor turfgrass on sports fields. Lists some safe characteristics, including densely rooted turfgrass that provides good rooting and prevents displaced grass and soil when players cut and grass clipped short to prevent hanging of cleats. States that soil firmness, uniformity, and stability present deeply rooted, weed-free turfgrass. Safe turf is also dust free; dust may be controlled by water. Lists characteristics of poor field conditions, including the center of the field being bare, annual weeds and other undesirable grasses making up major portions of the field, and soil is bumpy, pitted, uneven, compact, and poorly aerated. When irrigated the water ponds or runs off. States that certain conditions may require immediate attention in order to keep field turf safe, including: 1) misapplication of one of more cultural practices or sudden attacks be pests; 2) turf is thin making footing unstable; 3) games played during rain or snow require strict attention because turf will be uneven, bumpy, compacted, and poorly drained; 4) constructions flaws producing poor growth, poor drainage, and unstable footing; and 5) development of clay layers.
