Abstract/Contents:Presents the results of two separate tests conducted between November 11, 1986 and April 18, 1987 under greenhouse conditions to determine seedling growth characteristics of perennial ryegrass and tall fescues cultivars. Characteristics included leaf color, growth habit, plant height, sheath length, tiller number pot plant and fresh weight per tiller. States that temperatures fluxuated between 21°C and 27°C with night temperatures around 15.5°C. Nine hours of fluorescent lighting was provided for the 4cm x 4cm peat moss soil mixed plots. Water soluble fertilizers (20-20-20) were applied twice during the early stages of plant development at a rate of 2.5 lbs of N, P2O5 and K2O / 1000 sq ft. Results were rated after eight weeks according to a 1-9 scale with nine having the darkest color. Some of the best performances came from 'Pinnacle', '4 Delaware Dwarf', and 'Aquarius.' The low-growing fescues (Muriett, Silverado, and Tribute) had more desirable characteristics than the common ones (Kentucky 21 and Clemfire). Entries with best field performance exhibited a darker color, a more prostrate growth habit, and smaller and more tillers in the greenhouse seedling trials.
