Abstract/Contents:Presents a report on turfgrass conditions in the Florida Keys and the water resources and management required to maintain stabilized turf. States that water is becoming a precious resource to Florida and there is hope for the southern islands due to a new pipeline and aquifer. Present costs are examined for expensive weekly lawn care. The focus is that it can be learned to grow grasses without supplemental water in an arid climate. Suggests "dry speu" practices, which aid the natural ability of grass. These "dry speu" include: 1) don't water grass, you may only cause more stress, 2) keep traffic off it, 3) when mowing, make sure blades are sharp, 4) don't fertilize 5) encourage others to do the same, 6) when the rainy season comes, rake dead grass and apply fertilizer, 7) sand and topdress is there is turf loss, 8) mow at higher levels, and 9) let clippings remain.
