Abstract/Contents:This topic relates directly to a timely concern of significant importance, that of conserving energy. While a "no-mow" grass for general use is not available, we should be mindful of what we can do to minimize our mowing. We should think of three approaches to attain this objective. Biological control is genetically selective if grasses used are within our control and "build in" minimum mowing and minimum maintenance by selecting certain varieties for their use. Chemical control as smaller amount of fertilizer at more optimum timing and growth retardants will be looked at. Physical control of grasses by mowing is conventional and often executed routinely, however when cost of operations escalates opportunities to get the job done for less will be look at. In roadside acreage and low maintenance area timing of mowing will be looked at greater. Combinations of the techniques to minimize mowing without jeopardizing the utility and aesthetics of turfgrass are important management considerations. Major rewards will occur to those who put it all together properly for their needs.
