Abstract/Contents:In recent years there have been some unexplained problems on Long Island golf courses. It was therefore decided to see if nematodes were playing a part in those problems. Soil samples were taken between June 30 and August 31, 1975, the time of year when nematode populations are usually at their highest. All samples were checked for the presence of insects and soil nutrient levels were also checked in many cases. Not all nematodes are capable of causing injury to plants, only those which possess a stylet are considered to be parasitic. There were six nematode species found in the soil test and all have stylets. The damage seen during the stress period of the summer was mostly chlorosis. Other damage observed was complete killing out of the turf on greens. These area had high populations of lance nematode Hoplolaimus sp. (350 - 950 / 100 cu of soil). Less damage was observed during periods of cooler temperature rather than higher temperature periods. It was also observed the in periods of moisture stress damage from plant parasitic nematodes was more evident.
