Abstract/Contents:There are three types of nematodes: those associated with animals, others with plants, and still others feeding on decaying organic matter. Our interest is with those that parasitize cells of turfgrass roots and are pathogenic. Plant nematodes are often divided into groups according to their method parasitism. Plant parasitic nematodes feed by injecting a needle-like structure termed a stylet. There are known nematodes that feed on grass roots cells without causing noticeable injury to cells, just reducing either or both top growth and root growth. It is also important to point out that nematodes can severely reduce turfgrass roots without noticeable above-ground symptoms. Nematodes have been shown to be victims of viral diseases. Root injuries by nematodes could also provide area of entrance for some fungi. The experiment consists essentially of replications of each of the three grass species, growing singularly in a agar test tube.
