Abstract/Contents:In 1969, my initial application of benefin was applied to control the approximate 50% and increasing amount of annual bluegrass (Poa annua). The #6 and #16 fairways were treated on August 1, 1969 where 50% of the fairway was Poa annua. The application decreased the Poa annua population. On July 29 and August 2 of 1871, benefin was applied to parts of eleven fairways. Again on August 5, 7, and 7 of 1973, eight received application. In 1974, parts of three fairways received application. We have more desirable turfgrass population with this program. Timing is important, apply it by the first cool night in late summer. We find the best results in maintaining low percentage of Poa annua are through a combination of withholding irrigation at critical times, fertilizing when Poa annua would benefit, raise cutting height, keep phosphorous levels low. Since the starting of this program Poa annua is down to 20% to 30% coverage from 50% coverage.
