| Abstract/Contents: | "The objectives of this study were to evaluate Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cultivars for their differences in nitrate uptake rate (NUR), temporal variation in NUR, and the relationship between NUR and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). NUR was expressed as micromoles per plant per hr, significant genotypic differences were found: Blacksburg > Conni > Dawn > Barzan = Eclipse > Gnome. When NUR was based on root mass, Conni was the highest and Blacksburg was the lowest. Eclipse was the highest when NUR was expressed on a root length, surface or volume basis. Significant temporal variation in NUR was found, with NUR on the second day > the first day following irrigation with tap water. Temporal variation was greatest in Blacksburg while none noted in Conni and Eclipse. Total nitrate uptake showed a positive relationship with total N recovery and total plant dry matter but NUR was negatively correlated with plant nitrogen use efficeincey." |
