Abstract/Contents:Varieties were seeded on a moderately fertile loam soil at the Ryders Lane Turfgrass Research Center. 4-3 x 5 ft size plots were used. The site has poor air circulation which results in higher humidity, longer dew retention, and higher temperature on hot days. Plots were irrigated during establishment and later for drought stress. Plots were mowed at 1 1/2 inch during establishment and 3/4 in as a maintenance height. Fertilization never exceeded 1 lb/N/M per application. Additional nitrogen was applied when conditions favored brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani) developed in summer and in fall when conditions favored brown blight disease (Helminthosporium siccans) development. A total of 6.25 lb/N/M to the rear half in the 1975 season. Broadleaf weeds were controlled with a mixture of 2,4-D and Dicamba. Cultivars Loft's Syn D-1, Diplomat, Omega, Citation, Yorktown, Birdie, Derby, Pennfine, and Manhattan performed well. Good resistance to brown blight disease and above average resistance of Rhizocotonia brown patch disease of these cultivars was also a big plus.
