Abstract/Contents: | The introgressive gene substitution method involves merely the addition of a small frequency of the useful new allele to elite cultivars of any cross pollinated species. An understanding of introgressive gene substitution technique makes it readily apparent that established elite cultivars of cross pollinated species might easily be improved if they already contain desirable alleles at a low frequency. After these cultivars have undergone a minimum of five to seven generations of random mating in isolation, one can assume that plants possessing these desirable alleles will also represent the parent cultivar in other respects. Such plants can be screened from the cultivar, interpollinated in isolation to produce homozygosity, for the useful allele. A few dozen of the selected plants after progeny testing will then be used as parents of the improved cultivar. |
