Abstract/Contents:Presents a study that determines if "the choice of grass really [affects] the appearance and durability of a lawn tennis court?" Results include that "the grass species that are traditionally [recognized] as being most wear tolerant for winter games (perennial ryegrass and smooth-stalked meadow-grass), were the most wear tolerant under simulated tennis play." Concluded that the "choice of grass could have a profound effect on the performance of a lawn tennis court but there was still much work to do to identify the best grass species and in particular cultivar to choose." Presents another study on perennial ryegrass, smooth-stalked meadow-grass and slender creeping red fescue which were found to be more wear tolerant than other grasses. Results include that "the most wear tolerant grasses for tennis were not the most wear tolerant for other uses." Concludes that "the choice of perennial ryegrass cultivar(s) had the overriding effect on performance." Discusses the effect of these studies on the grass at Wimbledon.
