Abstract/Contents:"On golf courses and similar areas receiving intensive use, rains and irrigation practices often maintain the moisture in the soil at a level which makes compaction continually a problem. Since the ordinary method of resting the grassed area to allow sufficient time for the natural forces to rebuild the destroyed soil structure is not practical, various tools and machines are used to mechanically create the desired condition. It may be concluded from the data presented, that under the conditions of this experiment, aerifying with the West Point Aerifier at a soil moisture level which is considered best for any other soil manipulation practice, i.e. not too wet or too dry, or when the soil clump easily crumbles with slight pressure, is satisfactory and will reduce runoff at least 50 percent or more on compacted soils. Mechanical soil aerification is not a cure-all, but a reasonable substitute for the forces of nature."
