Abstract/Contents:Discusses the maintenance done on a golf course before a major event, and the factors that influence the turf. Describes green speed, which is measured with a Stimpmeter, explaining that "there are a number of management techniques that can be implemented to achieve the desired ball roll and green speed." Discusses the effects agronomic factors have on turf, explaining that "to condition turf for putting, a number of issues have to be examined. These include: soil texture,...thatch accumulation, grass type,... consistency of turf sand,...green size, traffic stress, and environmental conditions such as shade." Describes the effect grass species have on ball roll and the effect surface contours have on putting green speed. Discusses the maintenance factors involved with good turf, including mowing heights, explaining that "a number of strategies can be integrated into a holistic program to produce the desired ball roll and pace." Discusses the effects that weather has on turf, explaining that "climatic conditions affect the growth of the grass plant, which directly impacts surface performance." States that "providing puttting surfaces that offer true and consistent ball roll is not as simple as lowering the mowing height. Many variables need to be considered when designing putting green management strategies."
