Abstract/Contents:"Providing dense, healthy turf is the easiest and most economical method of preventing weeds from becoming established. The key to successful weed control is uniform application of the correct amount of the proper herbicide to the turfgrasses in a good growing condition. Control of grasses that reproduce from seed can be accomplished by the use of one of several pre-emergence herbicides. Some of these herbicides can be used with a high degree of safety to warm season turfgrasses as well as to ornamentals. Control of most established annual grasses in bermuda and zoysia can be obtained with one of the organic arsenicals, either alone or in combination with 2,4-D or Dicryl. For control of these weeds in St. Augustine and centipede, the use of three of four applications of atrazine at 4 to 6 month intervals is suggested. Non-selective, contact herbicides such as Diquat and Kilz-all, are useful for killing patches of annual grasses and for edging especially around ornamentals. Most perennial grasses are difficult to control without injury to the turf. Early control, before these persistent weeds gain a foot-hold, is imperative. Mechanical removal or repeat spot-treatment with such herbicides as dalapon, amino triazole or Diquat are two methods that can be followed. Soil fumigants also can be used. Selective control of sedges in bermuda and zoysia can be obtained with repeat applications of organic arsenicals. Sedge control in St. Augustine, centipede and zoysia can be accomplished with atrazine. Some species of sedges require repeat treatments. Much progress has been made during the past few years for controlling weeds in warm season turfgrasses. Several new herbicides are on the horizon."
