Abstract/Contents:There are two aspects of traffic stress - abrasion and compaction. Abrasion is the bruising and tearing of grass morphological parts. Compaction is altering or destroying structure of rooting medium. Traffic stress may be lessened by selecting grasses that will tolerate abrasion and grow in high bulk density rooting media. Bermudagrass is the best adapted warm season grass for sports turf. Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue are cool season grasses used extensively for sports turf. Rooting medium effects abrasion stress. For optimum turf production an ideal soil composition should be made up of 50% mineral and organic, 25% solution and 25% gaseous fractions. Soil solution is held in the micropore spaces, and the gases are retained in the macropore spores. The ration between soil solution and gas fractions varies under certain conditions, (i.e. heavy rainfall, traffic..). Design considerations that should be taken into account to eliminate or avoid compaction are as follows: select compaction tolerant grasses, limit traffic, implement proper subsurface drainage and, finally, select a proper rooting media (1) sand, (2) modified soil, and (3) non-modified soil. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
