| Abstract/Contents: | In April of 1985, 3 preemergent herbicides treatments for the control of large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis) in Bermudagrass (cynodon sp.) were tested at the Oklahoma Turfgrass Research Center: Bensulide (6 lb. of AI/A) + Oxadiazon (3 lb. of AI/A), Pendimethalin (3 lb. of AI/A) and oxadiazon (3 lb. of AI/A). All three preemergent treatments provided acceptable levels of control for large crabgrass; none of the products adequately controlled annual broadleaf weeds. The same three products applied at the same rates mentioned above were applied in Pennfine Perennial ryegrass and tested for goosegrass control. Significant goosegrass control was found with the three products tested. Control of annual weeds with Prodiamine was also studied. Prodiamine gave significant control of both annual grassy and broadleaf weeds when applied in either the fall or spring of the year. The following steps should be followed to ensure success when using preemergence herbicides: 1) timing, 2) turf preparation, 3) amount, 4) activation, and 5) second application. |
