Abstract/Contents: | "Advances in our understanding of the biology of ectotrophic soilborne pathogens that cause patch diseases of turfgrasses are presented. The identification of new members in the complex of fungi that cause these diseases has dominated the progress made in turfgrass pathology during the past decade. At least four new patch disease and/or agenst were reported in North America during the 1980's. Leptosphaeria korrae and Magnaporthe poae were identified as incitants of necrotic ring spot and summer patch, respectively. Gaeumannomyces incrustans was described as a root-infecting species. Ophiosphaerella herpotricha an d Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis became recognized as the second and third incitants of spring dead spot. It also became apparent that take-all patch ( Gaeumannomyces graminis var. avenae) is more widespread than had been recognized earlier. This progress has contributed significantly to the ability of scientists and industry to focus and refine efforts for developing disease control strategies and materials, including the use of molecular techniques for identification of the pathogens. Studies on the ecology, taxonomy and physiology of these newly recognized pathogens have begun. Other chapters of this book report on the existing knowledge concerning the biology of these pathogens and diseases." |
