Abstract/Contents:Investigates factors which may lead to a loss of nitrogen in soils through the process of denitrification. Describes procedures used in an experiment which tested the amounts of nitrogen dioxide and dinitrogen gasses released by soil following fertilization. Finds that "immediately following ferilization and irrigation, gaseous nitrogen losses occurred," "denitrification is a process that can lead to significant amounts of nitrogen lost from the system," "nitrogen dioxide losses are minor compared to dinitrogen, which is reassuring considering the effect of nitrogen dioxide on atmospheric ozone destruction," "dinitrogen losses occur even after small rainfall/irrigation," and "large dinitrogen losses are a possibilty when large rainfalls occur immediately following fertilization." Makes some recommendations on how to prevent a large amount of nitrogen loss. States that "denitrification of applied nitrogen can cause it to be limiting for turfgrass growth and development," and that growers should "consider the soil type, source of fertilizer and ability of the soil to drain excess water when planning a fertility program to minimize potential gaseous losses of nitrogen."
