Abstract/Contents:Discusses the emergence of more aggressive dollar spot disease and possible causes. States that "there is no research to explain the sudden occurrence of what appears to be a more aggressive strain of dollar spot. We can only speculate on why this is happening." Explains that dollar spot is composed of several different strains called "vegetative compatibility groups" which can exchange genetic material and potentially develop more aggressive disease strains. States that "some of what has been reported to be a more aggressive strain of dollar spot may simply be fungicide failure due to R. floccosum becoming resistant to the fungicide." Explains that the increased use of curative rather than preventative fungicides allows dollar spot populations to build up and then suddenly emerge when conditions are right. Explains that another factor leading to the increase in dollar spot may be the misconception that a contact fungicide should be applied to an infected plant when, in actuality, contact fungicides do nothing to stop the disease when already inside the plant. Concludes that "hopefully, some of the above mentioned causes and solutions will help you better manage the disease."
